Bath Astronomers operate an inflatable mobile planetarium of 5 metres diameter. It contains a projection system which illuminates the entirety of the inner hemisphere so those sitting on the floor can experience an all round view of the wonders of the Universe.

There is a choice of shows from the European Southern Observatory, and planetariums around the world as well as virtual stargazing using Stellarium software. Fancy booking this, get in touch.

The dome can fit up to 30 students to Yr6 with two teachers/teaching assistants although we often split groups to 25 students for comfort and to aid attention. We bring along cushions to ensure comfy bottoms and for extra comfort, school gym mats are often used as well.

There are certain requirements that need to be met for us to use the planetarium safely:

  • An inside area, away from draughts.
  • A floor area of at least 6m square, preferably more, which doesn’t impinge on routes to fire exits.
  • A clear height of 3m without beams, lighting or projectors impinging above the floor area.
  • Two mains plugs (16A) within 10m of the setup point.

We have shows suitable from Reception Class through to Key Stages 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 as well as adults and families. We often use the planetarium as a fallback on stargazing sessions in case of inclement weather.

Common questions

How long does it take to set up ready for the audience and then take down later?

The minimum set up time is 30 minutes prior to schedule show start time. We recommend 45 minutes to manage issues arising.

The planetarium can be dismantled and packed up within 20 minutes.

Where do the audience sit?

The audience sit on cushions on the floor with their backs to the projection system. Where gym mats are available at a location, we also use these on the floor. We regularly bring 20 cushions.

How many people can fit inside the dome comfortably?

Up to 30 Key Stage 1 students and their teachers can sit comfortably in the dome for a 30 minute session. For longer sessions, we’d recommend reducing the number to 25 students. Up to KS2, 25 students is a more comfortable number. For KS3 and KS4, 20 students.

Are there flashing lights in the shows?

Many shows do contain flashing lights and so organisers should advise of students with a light hypersensitivity well beforehand so an appropriate programme can be devised.

Can wheelchairs users and those with limited mobility enter the mobile planetarium?

One wheelchair can be taken into the planetarium by lifting the side skirt before the main group enter. Exit is effected in the same manner once the main group have left. Those with limited mobility can often enter via the airlock given assistance. Alternatively, entrance can be made again under the side skirt.
